Intensive Atmospheric Soundings during the Chinese Arctic Cruise in 2018

By steingod |

During the Cinese Arctic Cruise in 2018 frequent radiosoundings were launched in support of YOPP Special Observation Period along the path of XUELONG ice breaker. The radiosoundes were launched 2-3 times per day from July 28th to September 3rd in the Arctic Ocean and a total of 76 soundings data were shared through WMO GTS in BUFR format. These BUFR files are now available for download at:

Ship-borne radiosonde observation data from Korea Polar Prediction System (KPOPS)

By laraf |

Data from the Yopp-endorsed project KPOPS are now available.

The radiosonde balloon sounding observations were performed from 5 August 2019 to 17 September 2019 to obtain the Arctic Ocean high-resolution atmospheric vertical profiles along the IBRV Araon cruise track at four times daily intervals (00, 06, 12, 18UTC). The data include vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed and wind direction up to about 30km. The data have been used for the data assimilation of the KOPRI Arctic weather forecast system.

YOPP SOP radiosonde and SYNOP for Baranova and Tiksi stations

By steingod |

Radiosonde and SYNOPs for Baranova and Tiksi stations for the YOPP SOP NH1 and NH2 are now available at

Data are yet not indexed in the YOPP catalogue. Work is in progress to index these datasets.

ECMWF IFS YOPP SiteMIP data available

By steingod |

ECMWF IFS for YOPP supersites are now available at http://thredds.met.no/thredds/catalog/alertness/YOPP_supersite/ifs-ecmw…. Preparation of discovery metadata for inclusion in the YOPP Data Portal is in progress. ECMWF is not responsible for any use that may be made of the YOPPsiteMIP dataset.

Meteo-France data for the YOPPsiteMIP SH

By steingod |

Meteo-France has extracted ARPEGE data over the Southern Hemisphere YOPP supersites. These data are now available on the ftp site ftp.umr-cnrm.fr (user: yopp / password: Arpege). Change working directory to YOPP-SH where NetCdf-MIP contains the output for the supersites using the exact  same format as used for the YOPP-NH super site (now available on the YOPP Data Portal). In addition 3D fields are output in a GRIB format (under YOPP-SH/3DFIELDS) as well. Inclusion of the SH data as NetCDF/CF in the YOPP Data portal is currently in progress.

YOPP supersites data from ARPEGE

By steingod |

CNRM, University de Toulouse, Météo-France, CNRS, Toulouse, France has provided YOPP Model Site Intercomparison data for the Arctic Supersites. These data are indexed in the catalogue and the results are available through https://yopp.met.no/metadata_search/?quid=3d5a7b4b0a927c64ef1d0f6d5759b… (push "search").

Data extracted from WMO GTS

By steingod |

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute is extracting public data from WMO GTS and converting these to NetCDF/CF. This is being done for SYNOP, TEMP and SHIP data. Some of these data have been indexed in the catalogue with discovery metadata (SYNOP), but not all. Furthermore, work is in progress on the TEMP data to support high resolution profiles.

YOPP supersites data

By steingod |

Several of the YOPP modelling teams have been working on extraction of data over YOPP supersites. Information from two models in the Arctic, ARPEGE and ECCC-CAPS are now available in NetCDF/CF through a THREDDS Data Server. Work is in progress to make these data searchable through the YOPP catalogue. The data is available at http://thredds.met.no/thredds/catalog/alertness/YOPP_supersite/catalog.html.
